Whenever an outside feature grants you a trait, like an origin or a civic or your government form, any traits given as a result are free. Yes, there are downsides too but the upsides of being a robot are much higher than anything else and it isn't paid for in traits. I have no issues with piracy, I have a simplified and therefore much better economy. I have 200% habitabillity in ALL worlds, I can have machine worlds which are ridiculously good by comparison to everything else. It should not be a free trait, the downside isn't severe enough. Having it be free would make it a automatic pick for most empire types (not all, but many). The downside to the trait (habitability penalty on frozen or dry worlds) is often irrelevant, but can admittedly be a big deal as well (depends a bit on RNG and what worlds you get nearby).
